James Jean's sexplorations

I've only become aware of James Jean by name in the recent years, quickly learning that he is both an extremely famous and coveted illustrator and coincidentally, a SVA grad. Above is the first interpretation in a tit-for-tat collaboration where Jean eventually and slightly reluctantly cedes control over the art direction to realise a good-cause project that eventually wins two awards for best print ad at Cannes.

If anything, it's another affirmation that shows our country's puritanical approach to obscenity and "offensive material" is at best quaint, completely limiting the opportunities to create such beautiful and gripping public artworks.

Maestro - A Documentary

Maestro - Larry Levan & early DJ culture 1/9

Maestro is a documentary that tracks the early days of house music and dance/club culture specifically through the eyes of DJs/producers and New York clubgoers of that era, piecing together a portrait of Larry Levan and revealing the history of places like The Loft, The Gallery, Paradise Garage, The Sanctuary, &c. It's touching and telling to see the revered place these clubs hold 20-25 years afterward for the barriers they broke, the rules they flouted, the home they created for those marginalised and the heroes they produced. Frankie Knuckles speaks quite candidly throughout the whole thing, and he for one, is one of my DJ heroes. Anyone and everyone should check out his remix of Hercules & Love Affair's amazing single, Blind, which features Antony Hegarty of the ...and the Johnsons fame.

...a deep examination of a specific, limited area.

Apparently, the definition is lacking, in that it should also include: ...and whom actually tend towards being wildly uninformed, speculative, obvious, and at the end of the day, entirely wrong.

Case in point, this NYTimes article:

"For months there has been a rising chorus of alarm about the surging growth in the amount of data flying across the Internet. The threat, according to some industry groups, analysts and researchers, stems mainly from the increasing visual richness of online communications and entertainment — video clips and movies, social networks and multiplayer games...In a widely cited report published last November, a research firm projected that user demand for the Internet could outpace network capacity by 2011. The title of a debate scheduled next month at a technology conference in Boston sums up the angst: 'The End of the Internet?'”

Right, it would outpace the feeble network capacity of today, if there were no moves to increase bandwidth at all by the reticent telecom companies in the States. But I smell government subsidies, money to be made, bribes and/or international corporations that would love to do the work for less just to get a piece of the US telecom pie. Isn't the world's third-richest man really nearby, and also conveniently involved in the telecom business (monopoly, whatevs)?

Spitzer and the Prostitute

NY Governor Spitzer, everyone...

It's bad enough to get wrapped up in a sting of high-class prostitutes, but New York Governor Eliot Spitzer gets kicked off his high horse with each drop of information that gets out into the media. The bit about Client-9 asking "you to do things you might not think were safe," or that he'd apparently asked for weird things before, and Kristen was OK with that... OR that Spitzer has three teenage daughters who will never trust a man again.

And the day gets better, because Tucker Carlson, the twerp in the bow tie, has been canned:
